Las fronteras y la Geografia y la Historia de las Américas: pueblos y espacios del norte de Mexico y del gran “pantanal brasileiro”

The comparative theme borders on the geography and history of the Americas opened the need to read the historiography, the text and the maps with a focus on physical and cultural spaces that distinguished the border areas of the subcontinent. The transformation processes of border areas are noticed when we look at the physical geography and social networks that generated the cultural landscape while usufruct established territories, settle, and seasonal movement. In today’s presentation I intend to put to it a comparative perspective between two large and distinct regions: the Septentrion of New Spain, comprising northern Mexico and southwestern U.S., the great swamp and the Paraguay River basin, the border area between Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The comments presented here represent large portions of both regions. The question that guides our thinking is: How do we understand the borders, which are distinguished from other socially produced spaces?El tema comparativo de las fronteras en la geografía y la historia de las Américas abre la necesidad de leer de nuevo la historiografía, los textos y los mapas con atención especial en los espacios físicos y culturales que distinguían a las zonas fronterizas del subcontinente. Los procesos transformadores de los espacios fronterizos se perciben cuando nos fijamos en la geografía física y en las redes sociales que generaron los paisajes culturales a la vez que establecieron territorios de usufructo, de asentamiento, y de movimiento estacional. En la presentación de hoy pretendo poner a su consideración una perspectiva comparativa entre dos regiones grandes y distintas: el septentrión de Nueva España, abarcando el norte de México y el suroeste de los EE.UU, el gran pantanal y la cuenca del alto río Paraguay, espacio fronterizo entre Brazil, Bolivia, y Paraguay.1 Los comentarios aquí presentados representan porciones de ambas regiones extensas.
